A beautiful morning dawned for our day in Marseilles. Mrs Monaghan persuaded the coach driver to take us up to the Cathedral of Notre Dame. He took the route of the Petit Train so we did well for views en route! But the view from Notre Dame surpassed all others – amazing. We all enjoyed a quick look around the cathedral before we walked down the hill to the Vieux Port. The live fish and octopus on the quay side were nearly as much admired as our reflections in the mirrored roof of the covered way on the quay.
We arrived at the Grand Savonnerie in perfect time for a really interesting – and understandable – workshop on how soap – Savon de Marseille – is made and then we made our own! Well – we cut the soap as it emerged warm from a machine, trimmed it to shape and then personalised our own bar with stamps – great fun!
We enjoyed our picnic lunch on some steps in the sun and then Mrs Monaghan found a cafe with space for 13. We each ordered a treat – crepe loaded with Nutella, ice cream, non-alcoholic cocktail ….. Delicious!
On to the Mucem – an excellent museum with too much to see in our hour there.
Back to school and then home with our hosts for our last evening.
Another wonderful day!
